Quiet Ripple by Yoshiko Yamamoto

Since the opening of GASP in the fall of 2004, I have been thinking on the ideas of design and art and the proximity of both. GASP Store is the result of this intersection. GASP Store will be dedicated to present the work of both local and international accomplished and upcoming designers with a focus on green design.
I am very pleased to present the renowned jeweler Yoshiko Yamamoto as the first artist to present a collection @ GASP Store. I have admired her work for years and wanted to give it a platform for exhibition and discussion.

Yoshiko Yamamoto, Quiet Ripple

I have been working primarily with nonferrous metals (copper, bronze, brass, silver & gold) as a medium for creating small scale of object/sculpture and personal adornment. During the course of 30 years, I have investigated historical value of the medium and its socio/economic influence on human being. I have done countless experimentation and acquired a large number of technical information to support for refinement of my creation. My vision has expanded from formal technical skills of traditional silversmithing and precious metal jewelry to paper, plastic, found/recycled materials in making jewelry and objects. As a maker of things, I always enjoy and welcome new challenges. As an educator, I expect and support students also challenge not only skills but also awareness of seeking their originality. My contributions to the field: I served as a board member for the Enamel Guild/ North-East, and Society of Arts and Crafts, Boston. Currently: Senior faculty member of the SMFA, Metals Area. I have conducted a number of lectures and workshops nationally. Exhibitions: international and national, including Germany, UK, Canada, Japan; SOFA, NY and Chicago annually. Awards: Niche Award, 2000, winner of Gold Jewelry, Niche Award Finalist, 2004, silver & stone, and 2006, Metal & Enamel. Work represented: Mobilia Gallery, Cambridge, MA. Publications: Art Jewelry Today 2, 1000 Rings, 500 Ear-Rings, 500 Bisels, 500 Enamel object, 500 Vessels, published by Lark Books.
The Art of Enameling, The Metalsmithing Art, The Lapidary Journal and NICHE Magazine. Permanent collections: Daphne Farago Collection/MFA, Boston, & Long Beach Art Museum, CA, Museum of Contemporary Craft - Permanent Loan.
Yoshiko has an upcoming exhibition in Aoyama, Tokyo, Japan at the Gallery Concept 21st opening April 2009.

TBA; Lowery Stokes Sims, Curator at the Museum of Arts and Design in NY will be lecturing on the topics of the intersection of art and decorative arts @ gasp. This lecture will also include conversations with Yoshiko Yamamoto. Date TBA.

GASP STORE presents the paintings of Anna Ortiz

While working within the realm of realism, I have been experimenting with the relationship between the formal aspects of a painting and its ultimate meaning. Very rarely do the material and meaning truly coincide to enhance each other’s values, but when that does happen the experience of viewing the painting changes drastically. It is here; in the ineffable that painting can create a sensation, an experience that requires no further explanation. My desire is to create this experience; in fact, my desire is to have this experience while painting and while looking at paintings. My work is more of a means of entry into this dilemma than a resolution.
