"The Dynamics of Belonging" brings together Colombian artists living and working in Colombia and in the United States, whose work questions and challenges the influence of nationhood in contemporary art production. This show proposes several ways of disrupting or transforming the concept of belonging by creatively challenging notions of "place" and "context". What does it mean to belong? How does one belong and what are the strategies and tactics inherent in this process? Is belonging an issue? If so, belonging to whom or what? Innovative forms of hybrid identities arise from this endless challenge, where context and place start playing a decisive role in the assertion or not of an identity- singular or inherited. The work chosen for this exhibition explores the paradoxes and dynamics inherent to the process of belonging within two different countries through ideas of inclusion/exclusion, exoticism, duality, and nationhood. The concept of a "geographical", "national" context, is somehow challenged, generating discussions on how to engage in contemporary art production, given the fact that cultural referents are shared horizontally and transcend a geographical and political context. The artists participating in this show are all Colombian, but only half of them are living and working in Colombia at the moment. This exhibition brings together the work of Luis Cantillo, Lina Dorado, Maria Elvira Dieppa, Rodrigo Echeverri, Gonzalo Fuenmayor, Max Steven Grossman, Rodrigo Mendoza Cortissoz, Marco Mojica, Anita (Ana Maria) Velasco, and GASP's Fresh Produce, Evelyn Rydz, in an eclectic mix of work, extending from drawing, collage, photography to painting and video.
