The Delphic inscription: “Know Thyself” and the Shakespearean update: “To Thine own self be true” imply the existence of some stable core to being. The operative assumption is that in order to know one’s self, one must pare away the multiple roles we construct for family, friends, and society, to discover the real person within. This show examines the possibility that, again quoting Shakespeare: “The play’s the thing.” Perhaps self-knowledge comes not from eliminating the myriad of personal performances but by acknowledging them. Subjective revelation switches from being a reductive to an additive process.
This show engages the connection between performance and identity. The title “Self-Entanglements” was chosen because the term connotes disruptiveness. It traverses a number of different disciplines from Logic Theory to Polymer Physics. In each case it plays the role of troublemaker. It makes compounds behave unpredictably, impedes Buddhist enlightenment, and negates the meaning of a declarative statement. These destabilizing attributes resonate with our work which seeks to complicate and redouble the idea of self.
