Words and phrases spun from our deeply rooted human experience
with sewing, mending, and weaving permeate our conversations and
testify to the enduring necessity of the act. Thread demonstrates
the power of unity through diversity. Though it functions as a
single unit, the filament is a composite – woven together
from a vast range of materials extracted from the bounty of the
earth – organic, synthetic, animal, vegetable, mineral. By
joining forces with other threads, a vast range of new materials
is produced to expand our scope of possibility. These powerful
new materials are multifaceted and operate in uncanny ways. Ultimately,
a network of ingenious body extensions threads us into a vascular
web of global communications systems, binding memories of our material
past to the continually unfolding future.
The Thread Counts Project, coordinated by Luanne Stovall and Leila
Lee Mitchell for Gallery Artists Studio Projects, is designed to
investigate the binding nature of thread and to recognize its dual
role as both a noun and a verb. Through this lens, thread is experienced
as an interconnective dynamic tissue that operates at the core
of our daily lives. For this exhibition, we issued a call for entries
and asked for proposals to be submitted that respond to the act
of threading/weaving through various personal and cultural lenses.
All media were considered. Proposals were chosen from a wide range
of local, national, and international entries and include the work
of artists, designers, and architects. The exhibition will extend
into two venues, a physical gallery space at GASP and a virtual
gallery space at www.threadcountsproject.com.
Giuliana Bruno, Professor of Visual and Environmental Studies,
Harvard University, is partnering with the Thread Counts Project
through the calendar of Wednesday evening film screenings at the
Carpenter Center for the Spring semester 2006 from 2/9 – 5/4/06.
