Fetish Gesture is an investigation of the gesture of the hands as the primary impetus engaging the narrative aspects of an artwork. Rooted in classical painting and sculpture, hands have been a way to not only define the subject, but express emotions and illuminate activites. All the while, gesture negotiates the space between two bodies or the body and the object. Vermeer, as an example, used defining hand gestures in all but one of his paintings, while other painters like Bottecelli, Michaelangelo, and Leonardo Da Vinci expressed gestural actions within the metaphoric framework of religious depictions.
In the context of photography and video art in this exhibition, the hand gesture become a hinge between the definition of the actual and the allegorical, a point of tension or intimacy between two subjects, a physical provocation, and the root of the spacial consciousness of the artist documenting reality and producing visual fictions.
