Visualizing Diaspora/ Constructing Self brings together the work
of a group of emerging and established artists whose work introduces
provocative and challenging questions beyond the stereotypical definitions
of identity and selfhood, instead it proposes vantage points from
where to discuss the contradictions and paradoxes of negotiating
differences. It illuminates the Quixotic urban chivalries of racially
inscribed bodies navigating in the postindustrial landscape in America
and elsewhere. This exhibition attempts to further open the investigation
on definitions of nationhood and locality in the digital age, postcolonial
times, and in preemptive behavior.
Visualizing Diaspora/Constructing Self offers a complex juxtaposition
of methodologies and approximations to the question of belonging
geographically and economically, understanding historical and philosophical
implications, and ultimately tolerance and communication. The show
does so with a rich and rigorous group of work, extending from painting,
drawing, video, installation, and photography to sculpture.
